Who may use the Erie County Sanitary Landfill and what is accepted.

WHO MAY USE THE ERIE COUNTY SANITARY LANDFILL?

The Erie County Sanitary Landfill may be used by:

  • Erie County residents

  • Erie County businesses 

  • Commercial refuse haulers who have entered an agreement with the Erie County Solid Waste Management District to provide services within Erie County. IS WASTE FROM OUTSIDE ERIE COUNTY ACCEPTED?

Waste from outside Erie County may be accepted at the Erie County Sanitary Landfill only if an agreement with the Erie County Commissioners limiting the quantity of waste and concerning liability issues has been entered, and approval from the Solid Waste District of origin of the out-of-county waste has been provided prior to acceptance of the waste.  Out-of-county waste generators or haulers may also be required to provide a disclosure.  Out-of-county waste is limited to no more than 200 tons per day or 20,000 tons per year.

WHAT IS ACCEPTED AT THE ERIE COUNTY SANITARY LANDFILL?

The Erie County Sanitary Landfill accepts: 

  • Solid waste from homes and commercial businesses 

  • Construction and demolition debris 

  • Industrial waste; if the acceptability of the waste is questionable, completion and approval of a Solid Waste Disclosure Questionnaire is required prior to disposal.   For more information on industrial waste disposal, contact the Department of Environmental Services,  Environmental Officer at 419-433-7303. 

Ohio Revised Code requires that all vehicles loaded with solid waste that is susceptible to blowing, bouncing, dropping or leaking from the vehicle must be covered sufficiently to prevent any part of the load from spilling onto the roadway.  An additional fee of $10.00 will be charged for untarped or unsecured loads.

WHAT IS PROHIBITED FROM DISPOSAL AT THE ERIE COUNTY SANITARY LANDFILL? 

The following materials may not be disposed at the Erie County Sanitary Landfill: 

  • Free liquids of any kind (exception for liquids that pass paint filter test) 

  • Refrigerated appliances, such as refrigerators, freezers, dehumidifiers, air conditioners, etc.  (for recycling information, click here.)  

  • Lead-acid batteries  (for recycling information, click here.)

  • Yard waste (for recycling information, click here.)  

  • Asbestos waste 

  • Biomedical waste (contaminated) 

  • PCB waste (exception for small quantity generators as defined in RCRA) 

  • Radioactive waste 

  • All hazardous waste listed in 40 CFR 261, Subpart D (AD-listed@ RCRA) 

  • Any waste that exhibits hazardous waste characteristics (40 CFR 261, Subpart C)

IS THERE A MAXIMUM AMOUNT OF WASTE THAT THE LANDFILL MAY ACCEPT PER DAY?   

The Erie County Sanitary Landfill may not exceed 800 tons/day of solid waste disposal pursuant to Ohio EPA Permit Authorized Maximum Daily Waste Receipts.  The Landfill will close for the remainder of the day if 800 tons has been received, and reopen the following scheduled day.
