How to Recycle Appliances

Appliances, such as stoves, refrigerators, washers and dryers are made from steel, America’s most recycled material. Cooling appliances like refrigerators, freezers, dehumidifiers and air conditioners however, contain another material called fluorocarbons (CFC) that should also be recycled. Fluorocarbons are a suspected cause of damage to the ozone layer.

Since 1992, the Federal Clean Air Act has required freon (the coolant material which contains CFC’s) to be removed from appliances before they can be disposed.  The gas is recovered and sent to a recycler where it is reprocessed and used again. Area scrap dealers provide the service when appliances are brought in for recycling, but must charge a fee for the service. Special training and equipment are needed for this recovery. The typical charge is between $10 and $20. Other appliances such as stoves and dryers may be recycled at no charge.
