What To Recycle
You can recycle GLASS, CANS, PLASTIC and PAPER at the seven drop-off sites provided by the Erie County Solid Waste District and the Vermilion Township drop-off location sponsored by the Vermilion Township Trustees. To prepare materials for recycling just follow the rules below and help save our natural resources, energy and landfill space.
GLASS
- Jars and bottles only. All colors.
CANS
- Aluminum, steel and bi-metal cans from food and beverages, empty dry paint cans, empty aerosol cans.
PLASTIC
- Beverage and laundry product bottles marked with a #1 (PET) or #2 (HDPE) on the bottom.
PAPER
- Newspaper, magazines, catalogs, office paper, junk mail and paperboard boxes.
CARDBOARD
- Clean corrugated, without wax coating or foil.
Recycle ONLY the items described above. At this time we do not have markets for the following items and we must discard them if they are placed in the recycling bin:
Glass - NO windows, light bulbs, mirrors, ceramics, cookware.
Plastic - NO toys, flower pots, flower flats, household items.
Polystyrene - NO cups, plates, meat trays, egg cartons or other "styrofoam".
How To Recycle
There are four simple steps to recycling the right way in Erie County:
- KEEP IT CLEAN - Rinse out food, detergent, etc. Discard greasy or dirty paper and cardboard.
- REMOVE LIDS - Take metal and plastic lids off glass and plastic containers. Discard.
- BAG CANS, GLASS AND PLASTICS (#1 and #2 only) TOGETHER.
- SEPARATE PAPER - Bag or box each type of paper- newspaper, magazines and catalogs, paperboard boxes, office paper and junk mail separately. Then follow the signs at the recycling sites to put each type of paper in the correct box.
How To Set Up A Simple Recycling Center At Home
This is all you will need to make it easy to recycle:
- A paper bag for newspaper
- A paper bag for magazines
- A cardboard box for flattened paperboard boxes
- A small plastic bag for junk mail and office paper
- A large plastic bag for cans, glass and plastic
By keeping the different types of paper separate and following the signs at the drop-off recycling sites, you will help maximize the amount of good, recyclable material collected.
