Programs For Classrooms
We provide a wide range of classroom programs for Erie County schools, samples
of which are listed below. These programs are offered at no cost. Most of the
materials used are supplied and can be adapted to your class's particular
interest. Programs can be scheduled by calling Erie County Solid Waste Reduction
Program at (419) 433-7303 Ext. 249, or by e-mailing us at
Recycle@erie-county-ohio.net.
Preschool-K. Blue Bug's Beach Party.
The classroom is covered in trash! The students hear how Blue Bug picks up his
beach and then hold a litter pick up in their own classroom.
Preschool-1. Storytime.
Students hear The Great Trash Bash a story by Loreen Leady. Everyone
then play "Earth Bingo" to reinforce what they have just learned.
Grades K-2. Vegetable Can Piggy Bank.
Are you learning about money? Supplement your lessons with this fun craft
project. Children learn about recycling and reusing while making a piggy bank.
Each student is asked to bring an empty, rinsed out vegetable can.
Grades K-2. Where does it go?
Through discussion children follow their classroom garbage as it makes it's way
to the landfill or recycling center. Each child is given part of the garbage
story to illustrate. The pages can be then assembled into a classroom book.
Grades 1-6. Papermaking.
What can we recycle in Erie County? Also discussed is what our recyclables
become the "second time around". Papermaking is demonstrated and students get to
make a seasonal object out of paper pulp.
Grades 3-6. Trash Makes History.
We take a look at how people throughout history handled their trash by having
the class read the skit - The Throwaway Three. How does what we throw
out differ from the past? - In a Native American culture, pioneer culture, and
industrial culture. Students look at trash from different eras and decide what
these items tell us about the people who disposed them.
Grades 3-6. Trash Can Tell.
Students look at the trash of an imaginary family. What does what we throw out
tell about us? How can we reduce what we throw out? Working in groups, students
decide if their trash should be recycled, reused or land filled.
Grades 4-7. Going Global.
What and how much does the average person throw out here and in other countries?
Compare disposal amounts and types with other countries through graphs and
discussions.
Grades 7-12. What's In Our Trash?
Take a look at what we really throw out. How can we reduce this?
Grades 6-12. Keys to Garbage
Students will be able to (a) classify solid waste according to natural and human
made items and recyclable and non-recyclable items; (b) construct a dichotomous
key for solid waste management; and (c) explain what can be done with solid
waste, depending upon its biological and physical attributes.
Grades 8-12. Green Shopping
Students learn how to be "green" consumers. Instead of price or name brand, they
learn to read labels, check packaging, and look for the best environmentally
friendly product to purchase.

Watershed Wonders
The Watershed

about the water cycle, Lake Erie, watersheds, non-point source and point source
pollution and how students keep our waterways clean.
Grades K-2
My Earth
The story The Lorax by Dr. Seuss is read to students. Vocabulary words-
conserve and pollution are introduced. Students construct their own Lorax puppet
and decide what their Lorax will speak for. Students start a plant from seeds.
Included in the box are student and teacher books, a video tape and two student
activity boards.
Grades 3-6
Home Safe Home

effect on humans and identify alternative products by creating a "green cleaning
wheel". Included in the box is background information, materials for students to
create waste wheels and make bath salts as well as a video.
Going Global
Students research Ohio’s top international trade partners. These countries are
located on a global map and connected to Ohio. Students learn to identify
resources needed to make products- are they renewable or nonrenewable? Students
also analyze information on graphs to make inferences about waste handling
practices in different countries. Included in the box is a global map, overheads
and all related materials.
Nature’s Way with Waste
Students utilize a number of science skills as they observe, compare and analyze
soil types, compost materials and more. Students study scavengers and
decomposition as they relate to a compost pile. Included in the box are
background materials and various supplies.
The Trouble with Litter
This unit is based on The Wartville Wizard. An animated video of the
story and a copy of the book are included. Students can reinforce lessons by
“fishing” for good and bad litter habits. Basic map skills are taught through an
interactive board.
