Youth Groups

Ever wonder what to do with your youth group? Let us come and visit! We provide a wide range of programs for the youth of Erie County, samples of which are listed below. These programs are offered at no cost to Erie County residents and all materials are supplied. They can be adjusted to meeting length and adapted to your group's particular interest, badge requirements or camp theme. To schedule a program, please call Erie County Solid Waste Reduction Program at (419) 433-7303 Ext. 249, or by e-mail at recycle@erie-county-ohio.net

Milk Jug Refrigerator Art - Participants discuss Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and then convert a piece of a plastic milk jug into a refrigerator magnet.

Leap Frog Game - Almost anything can be reused. An old box becomes a fun leap frog game complete with jumping plastic frog.

Enviro Buddy - Participants discuss litter, reasons why we shouldn't litter and ways to reuse throw away items. Everyone then makes a head from sawdust, grass seed and pantyhose. Just add water and watch it grow hair!

Paper Pad Making - Participants discuss recycling and ways to reduce our garbage. They then make a paper notepad out of scrap office paper.

Scrap Books - Cereal boxes are converted into scrapbooks. Homemade rubber stamps can also be made to decorate the books. Participants discuss the different types of things we throw out.

Flubber Making - Discussions of recycling with an emphasis on plastics starts off this activity. A homemade "silly putty" is made as an introduction to the world of chemicals reactions and plastics.

Earth Bingo - Participants learn how to reduce our waste while playing a fun game. Prizes are supplied and everyone leaves with something.

Rainsticks - Participants learn about ways to recycle and reuse. Everyone then makes a rainstick out of old mailing tubes. This activity could be done with younger children but each would need an adult partner.
