EDUCATION
The Erie Soil and Water Conservation District provides free of charge programs to encourage an awareness and appreciation of our natural resources. Lessons, demonstrations and materials can be adapted for all age levels. Some possibilities are listed below:
Presentations
The EnviroScape is a colorful interactive model that graphically demonstrates human impact on the environment, erosion, water pollution, conservation efforts, and land use issues. This presentation is extremely popular with groups of all ages, but especially upper elementary.
Wildlife - We can do presentations for your class, group or organization about wildlife in Ohio particularly as it pertains to wildlife management and habitat. Fur, skulls, antlers and such are just some of the wildlife related items we bring along for our talks, which can be tailored to indoor settings as well as outdoors.
Amazing Soil - Students will learn about the various layers of soil, what it is made of, the different textures and the importance of soil to humans.
Rocks and Minerals - We bring in an Ohio Rocks and Minerals set and a Mohs scale of hardness mineral kit. Presentations vary depending on the age of the students. We may cover the rock cycle, the three classes of rocks and how rocks are identified.
Worms, Worms, and Worms - Students learn the value of worms, composting and maybe even make their own worm habitat.
Trees are Tree-mendous - Students learn why trees are important. We talk about the rings of a tree, the different parts of a tree and maybe even learn to identify a few trees.
Groundwater model demonstration - Students will explore the movement of water through the Earth's systems.
The Importance of Agriculture - We discuss local crops and livestock. How they are produced and the many ways they are used.
Other Possible presentations: Stream Quality General Conservation
We would be happy to come to your group, club, organization, or business to encourage conservation through any of the above topics or a topic of your choice. We look forward to hearing from you! Please call Celine Hemminger 419-626-5211.
