PRO SE Domestic Violence Program

In 1993, the Court instituted a program for pro se domestic violence cases.  This program enables individuals who allege that domestic violence has occurred in their households to come to the Court to request a Civil Protection Order without the representation of an attorney.  A court staff member assists the individual through the process of preparing the paperwork for filing and accompanying them through the necessary hearings scheduled for their case.  If the Judge or magistrate hearing the case finds domestic violence has occurred, appropriate orders are issued prohibiting contact between the parties.  Approximately seven days later, additional orders are issued regarding custody, support and visitation.  The program was developed to address the ever-growing problem of domestic violence for individuals who may have been prevented from filing in the past because they were unable to afford an attorney and did not know how to proceed on their own.
