If I already have insurance, can I still get Medicaid?

Yes. Your private insurance is the insurance which will pay first. If there is a balance left to pay, the state will determine if any additional money will be paid.

Yes, Medicaid covers prescriptions as long as the prescription is on the list of covered drugs. The pharmacy has a list of what prescriptions are covered.

What are the exemptions for OWF (Ohio Works First)?

None. Erie County deals with what a person CAN do and not what they CAN’T do. We do not accept a doctor’s slip to exempt someone from the OWF work requirements of thirty (30) hours per week for one parent families, thirty-five (35) to fifty-five (55) hours for two parent families. We will place someone in a work assignment which is conducive to what a person is capable of doing. We will also have a client cooperate with BVR (The Bureau of Vocational Rehabilitation), job search, GED (General Education Degree) classes, education, training or any other component which will enable the individual to regain his or her employability and become self-sufficient.

What does the medical card cover?

There is a brochure (JFS 08030 Rev. 8/2000) which explains everything that is covered by the medical card. It is available at any ODJFS office or can be accessed through our forms and links page. A provider will be able to tell you if the service is a covered service. A provider is given an eight hundred number to call prior to the service being rendered to check to see if the service is covered.

How many food stamps will my family receive and how long will it take to receive them?

The following factors determine the size of the food stamp allotment.

  1. How many members are in the household.

  2. The earned and unearned income of the household.

  3. The shelter expenses of the household.

  4. The day care expenses of the household.

  5. The child support expenses of the household.

  6. The third party medical expenses of the household.

Food stamps are now received in the form of an EBT (Electronic Benefit Transfer) card and sometimes may be available for use as quickly as seventy two hours after approval.
