Terry Lyons has been with the Erie County Sheriff’s Department since 1984.  He has held  the positions of Deputy Sheriff, Jail Administrator, and Captain prior to being  elected as Sheriff in 2001.  He’s a graduate of the Sandusky Police Academy.  His educational background also includes the United States Marshal’s Service Training and the F.B.I. National Academies.

Since Sheriff Lyons has been in office, the department has implemented a more community oriented policing concept.  This has been accomplished by establishing sheriff substations in Berlin, Groton, Huron, Margaretta, Milan, Oxford and Vermilion Townships.

The D.A.R.E. program has been expanded to include 6th grade students in the Margaretta and Berlin-Milan School systems.  A School Resource Officer has also been placed at EHOVE Career Center.  This officer is funded by a state grant in partnership with EHOVE and the Office of Criminal Justice Services.  Involvement with the local schools has been a tremendous aid with accomplishing these goals.

Additional deputies were added to the Court Security Division.  This enabled the department to implement the major portion of Erie County's Court Security Project.  This project includes the operation of newly created holding cells and restricted access to the parking lot and certain court offices.
