Warning Signs Of An Abusive Personality

Pushes for quick involvement; pressures for an exclusive commitment almost immediately.

 

Jealousy; excessively possessive.

 

Controlling; interrogates intensely.

 

Unrealistic expectations; expects his partner to be perfect and meet all his needs.

 

Isolation; tries to cut his partner off from friends/family.

 

Blames others for problems/mistakes -- it's always someone else's fault.

 

Makes others responsible for his feelings -- "You make me angry" instead of "I feel angry".

 

Hypersensitive; easily insulted.

 

Cruelty to animals/children (65% of those who abuse partners will also abuse children).

 

"Playful" use of force during sex; enjoys holding partner down.

 

Verbal abuse; constantly criticizes; says cruel, hurtful things.

 

Rigid sex roles; women are to serve him.

 

Sudden mood swings:  switches from sweetly loving into explosively violent.

 

Past battering:  admits to hitting women in the past.

 

Threats of violence:  makes statements such as "I'll break your neck".
